FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: KHJ? The FCC does not issue three
letter call signs, so is this a "Pirate" radio station?
A: No, we are not building a
"pirate" radio station. Our assigned FCC facility number is 135771. Our actual
assigned call letters are KHJA-LP, which will be heard once each hour.
Q: Isn't KHJ a station from Los Angeles?
A: Yes, and in the 60's & 70's, 93/KHJ
was one of the most famous radio stations in the world. The Bill Drake "Boss"
format took 93/KHJ from last place in the radio ratings, to number one in a very short
period of time. While this new KHJ is a local, community station...it is also a tribute to
the legendary station 93/KHJ in Los Angeles. We will "super-serve" the people of
Jefferson county, but with the most professional sound any radio station could ever
experience, with some of the excitement, fun and wide spectrum playlists that would
reflect the 30 most popular songs in the nation from the 60's, 70's and 80's.
Q: What makes this a "community"
radio station?
A: KHJ wants to become an important part of
the Madras community. It is a Non-Commercial LPFM station that will be able to broadcast a
wide variety of community public service information. In the future, KHJ would like to
broadcast Madras school sporting events, tie in with local law enforcement to quickly
spread important safety information, perhaps even help circumvent criminal activity by
reporting suspect vehicle information.
Q: If KHJ is non-commercial, how can it be
of benefit to local businesses?
A: KHJ can play an important role in the
local economy, by attracting tourists to stop, eat or stay in town. Also by keeping local
residents informed of community needs and events. Even though KHJ will not
"sell" commercials, we will be able to accept money for underwriting
announcements. Local businesses that help pay for the costs associated with broadcasting
will receive NAME RECOGNITION!
KHJ can't advertise sales, price and
item...but we can mention the business name, address, phone, hours open, main product and
in some cases, a company slogan. This, along with promoting tourism should be more than
enough to help stimulate the local economy.
Q: How far will KHJ cover? Will it be heard
in Bend?
A: No one in Bend will probably hear our
station until they drive north. FM radio works on the principle of "line of
sight", so an FM signal tends to radiate as far as it can "see". This is in
relationship to power levels as well. From a high vantage point, it would only take a few
watts on FM to cover a city the size of Madras. The FCC has limited the power and height
of the LPFM class of radio stations. We will be operating with 100 watts of output power,
which should cover Culver, Madras and Warm Springs, keeping the focus on our local
community.
